Why is it that just about every village, town or city has its White Horse(s)? Even in Belgium you'll find thousands of cafés called "'t Wit Paard"... Time for some research, Sam! May I suggest you go and ask all the owners? ;-) ( BTW: congrats on the house coming along...)

Now I might be able to help on this one. There's a bloke in my parents' village who is a bit of an authority on pubs. He might be able to shed a bit of light on the subject. He's usually to be found in the Sow and Pigs (another fine establishment). Might be worth standing him a pint in the name of research. I think I remember reading that 'the White Horse' and 'the Red Lion' are the most popular pub names in the country. There was a spate of renaming pubs ridiculous things like 'the badger and carrot' a while back, but thankfully the breweries seem to have seen sense and most of them are being put back the way they were

The Sow and Pigs? If I ever start a pub, I'll sure consider this name! Brilliant. When you do find out more: let us know - you made me curious (wonder if there are pub blogs - perhaps something I should check out...)
