A breath of fresh air

384 votes to 184 (a majority of 200) in favour of a ban on smoking in all pubs, clubs and restaurants in England from the summer of 2007

Roll on 2007

[Edit - Of course there are 2 sides to every story. Check out Serge's Holy smoke (2) post on No-copy for the opposing view]

When the U.S. first considered a similar ban, smokers and hospitality establishments predicted a disaster. The ban passed and a disaster didn’t ensue. People and businesses adapted.

Sorry, Sam, but I tend to disagree with you here. Too long a story to put in a comment. If you find the time: read my post?
Andrea: of course everybody adapted. Was there any other choice?

@Andrea - They said similar things in Ireland when they imposed the ban there and the apocalypse never came. The worst I've heard is complaints that the pubs now smell of beer not smoke

@Serge - feel free to disagree, I love a good debate. I've read your post and still support the ban. That's the thing about ideals such as freedom of choice, they work fantastically as ideals but there has to be exceptions to the rule in real life or we end up with anarchy

Well Sam, you've already read my post on the matter, it's your comment that lead me here!

Needless to say it's the almost exact opposite of your opinion.

@Cornell - as I said to Serge, I've no problem with people having other, even opposite, opinions to me. Blogging should be about encouraging a discussion/discourse.
No smoking while you're here though ;)
